A selective sixth form centre for excellence 21 ITALIAN A LEVEL MATHEMATICS A LEVEL An A Level in a modern foreign language would be beneficial to a great majority of courses at university, and would be particularly helpful if you choose to spend a year abroad. Modern languages can lead to a variety of exciting careers such as translating, interpreting, finance, law, sales and marketing, engineering, tourism, leisure, public sector, United Nations and European Union, media, linguistics and teaching (primary and secondary). Additionally, the knowledge of a foreign language can allow you to pursue any career at an international level. CONTENT This course will help to expand your interest in the Italian language and culture as well as develop your linguistic skills. You will focus on a range of historical and contemporary topics which will further develop your understanding of Italy. The course will include literature and film and will encourage you to remain up to date with current affairs. This course is offered in partnership with the Italian Consulate. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS In addition to the general entry requirements for CTK Aquinas on page 10, you will also need GCSE Italian at a grade 9-6. ASSESSMENT The syllabus covers a range of topics appropriate to A Level language learning. All four skill areas will be assessed at the end of the course and will reflect the content of the course. Skills include listening, reading, writing, speaking and grammar manipulation through translation. There is also a focus on the culture and history of Italy. Mathematics is a much sought after qualification for entry to a wide variety of careers and Higher Education courses. An A Level in Maths can be the starting point to a variety of careers – from engineering to accounting. As a highly regarded subject it opens doors to a range of career paths including accountancy, economics, teaching, engineering, medicine, mathematics and computing. CONTENT Mathematics is both a stimulating and challenging subject, which is very highly regarded at advanced level. Both employers and universities will take a keen interest in you if you have successfully completed A Level Mathematics. Topics you will study include indices, surds, polynomials, coordinate geometry, differentiation, integration, trigonometry, sequences, logarithms, first order differential equations, vectors and numerical methods. In mechanics, you will also study forces, equilibrium, kinematics, Newton’s laws of motion and momentum, whilst in statistics you will study the representation of data, probability, discrete random variables, continuous random variables, hypothesis testing and correlation and regression. To succeed on this course, you must have a strong enthusiasm for problem solving. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS In addition to the general entry requirements for CTK Aquinas on page 10, you will also need GCSE Mathematics at grade 7. You will also be required to show an appropriate knowledge of algebra before being enrolled onto the course. ASSESSMENT Examination at the end of each year of study.
