A selective sixth form centre for excellence 25 SOCIOLOGY A LEVEL RELIGIOUS STUDIES A LEVEL An A Level in Sociology can be the starting point to a variety of careers – from social work to teaching. As a well-respected subject it opens doors to a range of career paths including politics, teaching, law and anthropology. It can lead to several career paths including social work, nursing, teaching, policing, the civil service and legal professions. CONTENT Your Sociology course will develop your critical thinking skills, encourage you to evaluate sociological thinking and change the way you see the world and your place in it. You will consider Sociology in the context of education, families and households, crime and deviance, beliefs in society, theory and research methods. You will also conduct in depth analysis of sociological theories and reflect on your own experience of the social world, applying it to your study of society. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS In addition to the general entry requirements for CTK Aquinas on page 10, you will also need GCSE Sociology (if you’ve taken it) at grade 9-6. As a highly regarded subject, it opens doors to a range of career paths including law, philosophy, social work, teaching and community work. Once you’re trained in your chosen field, your qualification will open up a whole new world of possibilities – you could go on to become a teacher, anthropologist, solicitor, or even a diplomat, depending on what you go on to study at university. CONTENT During your course, you will develop an in-depth understanding and appreciation of religious beliefs and teachings, as well as the disciplines of ethics and philosophy of religion. Your course will be thoroughly engaging and further develop your interest in Religious Studies. The topics you will study include philosophy of religion, arguments about the existence or non-existence of God, the challenge for religious belief of the problem of evil, the possibility of life after death. You will also take part in debates surrounding the concept of conscience and free will, the influence on ethical thought and its developments in religious beliefs and the philosophy of religion. In addition to this, you will study developments in Christian thought, religious beliefs, values and teachings, sources of religious wisdom and authority, practices which shape and express religious identity, and how these vary within Christianity. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS In addition to the general entry requirements for CTK Aquinas on page 10, you will also need GCSE Religious Studies (if you’ve taken it) at grade 9-6. ASSESSMENT You will be assessed entirely by external examination.
